Fighting bias in the workplace

To promote an unbiased, welcoming, and inclusive workplace for all, PatientPop employees recently attended our first ever “Fighting Biases in the Workplace” workshop.

Led by the Women’s Resource Group and the Diversity and Inclusion Resource Group, the workshop began with an educational session on biases — what they are, how they appear in the workplace, and why it is important to be aware of them — and concluded with a group discussion.

“We wanted to host this workshop in order to create a safe space for PatientPop employees to talk about their experiences in fighting biases. Our ultimate goal was to make sure those who attended left with tools to identify their own biases and learn how to deal when they are confronted with biases.”

For the discussion, attendees broke into small groups that were intentionally created to include members of different teams. They were then prompted with several examples of workplace bias. Employees discussed their own personal experiences with the examples shown and then offered solutions that would help avoid these situations from occurring. Ideas were then presented to the larger group.

Although our two employee resource groups have held panels in the past individually — including the Women in Leadership and Diversity and Inclusion panels — this was the first event organized by both groups together.

The mission of the Women’s Resource Group is to foster cross-functional relationships, create mentorship and professional development opportunities, and be a support system for women in the Los Angeles tech community. The group was founded in 2018 and has held a variety of events for PatientPop employees, such as a self-defense class and a happy hour for Women’s History Month.

Formed in 2019, the Diversity and Inclusion Resource Group strives to attract, retain, and celebrate diversity of thought and perspectives that reflect our team, customers, and community. The group is committed to building an inclusive organization where everyone is empowered to bring their full selves to work.
