Employee spotlight: Bronwyn Perry-Huston, engineer

One PatientPop employee who always brings her best self to work is Bronwyn Perry-Huston. Bronwyn is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, with a love of medicine and engineering. She has worked as an engineer on the Research and Development Team at PatientPop since April 2018.

We asked Bronwyn to answer a few questions about what it’s like to work as an engineer for PatientPop. Read on to discover her day-to-day responsibilities, her favorite thing about working at PatientPop, and her advice for other engineers interested in joining our team.

What do you do at PatientPop?

I am a full-stack engineer (front end and back end), who focuses on creating software that helps practices thrive. I collaborate with other engineers, product, and design to create new features and enhance the PatientPop solution.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My day starts with a quick stand-up meeting with my project team, where we sync up on the current story and feature work and also work to remove any blockers for the team as a whole. The bulk of my day is spent writing code and collaborating with other engineers, product managers, and designers to create features that benefit PatientPop customers.

What made you decide to join the PatientPop team?

I have always been torn between my love for medicine and my love for engineering. I was a double major in computer science and biology with a pre-med emphasis, and I even have my EMT license. I eventually gravitated toward working as a software engineer in the healthcare industry and have done so for the past few years.

I joined PatientPop because I love the company’s mission. At PatientPop, I can make a positive impact on the healthcare industry by improving the patient experience and helping practices grow.

What’s been the most challenging thing you’ve worked on?

I worked on a project to spin up a new microservices infrastructure using serverless technologies. I only had a surface-level understanding of many parts of Amazon Web Services (AWS) before the project, so it was challenging to ramp up. In the end, it was incredibly rewarding to create reusable infrastructure as code.

What's your favorite thing about working at PatientPop?

It’s cliché, but my favorite thing about PatientPop is the people, 100%. I love all of the engineers on our team; they are an amazing, supportive, and highly intelligent group that works hard to improve our solution and technology stack. It’s a privilege to come in every day and be able to learn new technologies, collaborate with the team, and deliver new features.

Tell us about a time you saw your work making an impact.

I joined PatientPop right as we began to redesign the practice portal, which is where our customers can track performance metrics. We used new technologies for the front end, and I was able to draw on my past experience to help the team deliver on the project. I was new to the team, but I was working on a project that was so impactful for customers. It was really exciting.

If you could choose to work any other job at PatientPop for one month, what would it be and why?

I would love to switch contexts in engineering and work as a product manager for a while. It would be interesting to switch perspectives to have a more hands-on role in developing the product roadmap and understanding the competitive landscape for our products. Outside of PatientPop, I would love to be a skydiving instructor!

What are you up to when you’re not at work?

Outside of work, I love going hiking and camping with my dog and hanging out with friends.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in working as a PatientPop engineer?

Come join us! If you are motivated and willing to learn, you’ll have an amazing opportunity to make a huge impact across the team.
